Mixed Media Masterclass
In this full day/weekend/multiple sessions workshop, I take participants through my mixed media technique of casting textiles with concrete in waste plastics.
Although I have been using papercrete in my work recently, this takes a long time to set so I use rapid set cement so people are able to go though the whole process in a day, although a weekend or multiple sessions allows more time for exploring both the textile and casting elements.
We start by making plaques cast in food trays as this gives the easiest access for attaching the textiles and most open for speed of setting.
- design panel layout
- create textured textile piece with recycled materials using hand stitched embroidery and fabric manipulation.
- stitch in place and cast
Depending on the timings of the workshop, the group can take a break either for lunch or until another day while they set.
- carefully release from trays and leave to set more (the colour changes from dark to light as it fully dries out. This can take days or even weeks depending on conditions)
- Option to try another tray type or to explore a more 3D shape.
- These will taken away to set and release at home.
- Participants will shown how to finish off their first pieces.
