Photo: Fabric Apples

Originally developed as a Health & Wellbeing workshop to look at self worth but suitable for all crafters. The fabric apples can be used as paper weights, pin cushions or just as decoration. As apples are associated with learning, growth & gifts, I ask everyone to consider their own gifts and write a positive message to seal inside their apple, a bit like a fortune cookie but sealed forever. The apples can be left plain or embellished with embroidery and beads.

  • Learn/refresh basic sewing skills.
  • Confidence to sew.
  • Using easy to obtain materials.
  • Social sewing with gentle conversation.
  • Thinking positively about self.
  • Opportunity but no pressure to share thoughts on own qualities/worth.
  • Achievement of making a useful object.
  • A small personal reminder.

It was first run as part of a Mothers Who Make skill swap event at PUSH festival at HOME theatre. I generally use recycled fabrics and was thrilled that one of the mothers brought a nappy cover their child had grown out of which really made her apple very personal.

It has also been run as part of the Salford Museum & Art Gallery Craft Socials programme and filmed as part of the Healthy Arts 2020 Vision programme. The video is available to watch on You Tube.

Lovely workshop. I’m very proud of my little apple and it will remind me to be positive and have kind self-thoughts. Mothers Who Make, PUSH festival

A simple & effective idea that preserves and captures a thought and memory. Well presented a lovely way of encouraging participants to share skills. Mothers Who Make, PUSH festival
