Aqueous Humour worked with the Contact Young Actors Company to create an all-new family-friendly promenade production to be performed in the Manchester Museum. We used the spaces, exhibits, history & architecture as starting points & inspiration. It was directed by Aqueous Humour’s Artistic Director, Tom Hogan using their trademark bouffon style following themes of power, control & obsession in a twisted future. Writer Sonia Hughes & singer Carmel McCourt also came in to work with the group. The end result was a dystopian 80′s futuristic comedy and a sell out hit.

New for the festive season for 2010, we are proud to unveil our feisty fairies. Life is hard with a tree up your tutu. Designed to be performed on stilts but could be adapted to ground level for low ceiling venues or bad walking surface.

Air Hostesses with the cognitive skills of jelly and the looks of roadkill. The delightful Muffins set off to serve the non-traveling public. You don’t have to fly to be treated like an economy class passenger.

Aqueous Humour were called into action for the Commonwealth Games 2002 held in Manchester: The Sky Muffins had touched-down. They embarked on a national tour of beauty and presented a special edition of Liquid News for the BBC. By 2007 touring had taken its toll and new uniforms were commissioned, keeping to their trademark pink & white but with a more elegant & feminine silhouette.

The Sky Muffins are a walkabout show with the possibility for static performance fitting any event. The Sky Muffins make wonderful hosts to meet and greet your guests and ensure they have everything they need for a lovely, eventful, unpredictable time.

Aqueous Humour was commisioned to work with the M6 Youth Theatre to create a piece of street theatre for the Carnival of Cultures in Rochdale under the title “Where Memories Meet Dreams”.

We explored what the phrase meant to the group. One recurring theme that came up was acheivement and reaching of goals. Being World Cup year, we started to look at dreams of football whether it be scoring a goal yourself or your team winning something. The biggest football memory is still England winning the World Cup in 1966 even though nobody in the room had been born. The dream of England winning again was alive at that point this summer but has had to be put aside for another 4 years. As there were nearly 20 young people involved, we felt the football theme would be good to go with using formations and celebrations as a starting point. We created a team of football trophies dressed in gold. The teams created new trophies either individually or collectively on various found plinths around the town centre.

I approached the design of the project more like a piece of tv/film than theatre for schools. Having a dedicated space at the PRU was a wonderful opportunity. I was able to spend time turning an unused classroom into a realistic flat for the whole lifespan of the project. As the audience at times were going to be in the set not just sat watching it as if on a stage, there was a great deal of pressure to get the detail right. Thankfully I had taken time over the small things as well as the overall look as the group had an impressive eye for detail. This was particularly clear when we would go back & replay scenes as they would be able to tell us where everything belonged and would pick us up if our continuity was out at all.

I created a working wardrobe for each character so that they could mix and match to give different looks for each episode but with continuity of basic pieces.

A basic outline was created for each episode before the start of the project so that I could get most of the props and costumes sorted in advance. I was required to act as stage manager for each episode plus often had to shop for extra props between episodes as the story developed through the interaction of the pupils.

I worked with Bury Met’s Theatre Arts & Performance Project to create the props & costumes for their spy project for Garden of Delights directed/choreographed by Clare Fildes. They created strolling work either on there own or in small groups as well as a static movement piece which involved all of them. The strolling work was also performed as part of Rochdale Carnival & Bury Street Festival.

Models with beauty and stunning vacuity attempt to stand out from the crowd. It’s all about being seen in the right places and with the right people. On the run from the paparazzi, they are dazzled by every camera lens just like a moth in headlights.

“Quantified” was developed from an initial sixties theme as a piece of strolling street theatre for Garden of Delights.  It went on to be performed at Xtrax Manchester, Bolton Fest, Padderborn Germany. The piece was directed by Aqueous Humour director, Tom Hogan with a group of young people from Bolton Octagon’s Activ8. Jenny Potter, a regular Aqueous performer, performed with them. This is one of the ways Aqueous trains new performers for their shows and how they originally found Jenny and from this group we found another Jenny (Jennifer Riding) who became a professional performer in this & other shows.

Summer 2002 proved very busy in Manchester with events for the Jubilee and Commonwealth Games. The Jubilee parade theme was Feast of Delights. Bury’s link country was Tuvalu, a set of pacific islands slowly sinking into the sea. We wanted to link these so that costumes and performances could be used at both events and so chose to base the performance on the variety of colourful creatures found under the sea. The groups had performed at festivals & parades in the past but always with everyone as roughly the same thing. They were adamant that they wanted an array of different characters this time.
